David

David halted outside the door, wishing the fire would have happened after his shift had ended. He hated thinking like that, but couldn’t stop it. All he wanted to do was spend the rest of the day studying for his next test. The taste of success from getting a B on the first test after Thanksgiving break renewed his hope of passing the class, earning the degree, and eventually being able to get a new job.

“David, what’s going on?” Clay called over his headset. “Let’s get inside and get this over with.”

David’s feet felt heavy as he stared at the door. Clay got David moving with a shove to his back.

Doing his best to ignore the flames that seemed to be everywhere once they were inside, he asked, “Which way?”

“Not sure. Bedrooms are to the right. Let’s start there.”

Thankful that the small ranch house would be quick to check, he headed down the hallway. All of the family except for the youngest daughter were already outside. They just needed to get the kid and get her out before things got any worse. Reminding himself that they would only need to be in the house a couple more minutes if things went as planned, he picked up his pace. His foot slid out from beneath him, sending him crashing to the floor on his side.

Despite having practiced for this exact scenario, his mind went blank on what he was supposed to do when it actually happened. He tried to sit up, but his body refused to cooperate.

I’m going to die in this house, all because I was too dumb to go straight to college and get a different job. I tried, but it’s too late now.

Even as he panicked, he knew he was being ridiculous, but couldn’t stop. Nothing had changed, yet everything was suddenly different in his life. He had somehow forgotten how to do the only thing other than football that he had ever been any good at.

His dad had spent years telling him he was too dumb for school and to just use his body to fight fires. Now, he was even failing at that.

Just before his thoughts could spiral much darker, he was dragged back to his feet.

“What the fuck, man?” Clay yelled. “This isn’t the time for a nap. Let’s go find the girl.”

“I’m lost, man. Nothing makes sense.”

“What are you talking about? We’ve done this a million times. You’re normally the one telling me to hurry up. You’ve got this. One step in front of the other, let’s start at the door on the right at the end of the hall. No rushing. No stopping.”

No rushing. No stopping.

That had been part of their training. His mind connected that thought to a thought of a girl, trapped in her room, needing help. The little imaginary mind map snapped everything back into place. He knew exactly what to do. He kicked the toy truck into the bathroom so they wouldn’t trip on it on the way out, and took the last few steps to the bedroom.
